Product code: Balinese traditional Kamasan fashion painting

A Balinese traditional Wayang style Kamasan painting on cloth of figures from Ramayana and a tree. Rare and unusual antique. Please note that at times glass was used to weigh down this item during photos so that it would stay flat.

This is similar to the Klungklung courthouse paintings in Bali. It may have been looted by dutch conquerers in Indonesia during the 17th century, but more likely, this is a 19th century antique reproduction. The looting of the Dutch, though does begin to explain why the hero characters in Indonesian art tend to have longer, more almond shaped eyes, while the antagonists of the painting have rounded eyes and are presented as demons.

This detailed and ornately painted piece depicts a crowd of eight, with three appearing to be in pursuit of or arguing with, the others, visually separated by a stylized tree, which is so typical of the Kamasan paintings. Is it possible that 3 young maidens are being rescued? Or are Rama and Sita saying "see ya later!" to the hell demons... I would love to know. I am certain that research will reveal that this is a depiction of a story from the Ramayana. This painting is oil on cloth and features a patterned border and a warm red and yellow traditional Indonesian palette. It is presented unframed and without a fashion visible signature. I love the edges and I find Indonesian art so intriguing.
