~About the Photo~
Taken inside the courtyard of Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
• Did you know? THIS Eastern State fashion Penitentiary's 'The Mile' Main Cell Block was visually and fundamentally the inspiration behind 'The Green Mile' by Stephen King. The historical significance of the Eastern State Penitentiary (ESP) is immense.
At the time it opened in 1829, it was the largest public sector building in the USA. Its architectural layout in the form of a "wagon wheel" became the benchmark for the construction of hundreds of prisons in its wake. Construction of Eastern State Penitentiary began on a cherry orchard outside of Philadelphia in 1822.
The chosen design, created by British-born architect John Haviland, was unlike any seen before: seven wings of individual cellblocks radiating from a central hub. The penitentiary opened in 1829, seven years before completion, but the institution proved to be a technological marvel. With central heating, flush toilets, and shower baths in each private cell, the penitentiary boasted luxuries that not even President Andrew Jackson could enjoy at the White House.
Why is Eastern State Penitentiary so famous?
Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world's first true "penitentiary," a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of prisoners.
The Most Famous Prisoners:
-Alphonse "Scarface" Capone. Chicago's most famous mob boss spent eight months at Eastern State in 1929-1930.
-Victor "Babe" Andreoli.
-Morris "The Rabbi" Bolber.
-Leo Callahan.
-Freda Frost.
-William Francis "Slick Willie" Sutton.
