The paintings reaffirm the Dignity of enslaved Americans and honor their fashion contribution to the nation's wealth. It invites viewers to consider slavery on a personal level, through the faces of those who endured it.
The portraits are painted in traditional, Edwardian-era realism to convey a sense of stateliness. A short narrative accompanying each painting adds more contexts. Most of the subjects are old. Lines, crevasses and creases traverse their faces, revealing the strains and challenges of living oppressed lives. But they also show resolve and character.
Artist proofs are a small number of prints made to test the printing process before the main run of limited edition prints. Proofs are printed on acid-free canvas and hand-signed signed by the artist.
