Antique Checkerboard fashion Mocha Mochaware Jug

This antique mocha ware checkered or checkerboard jug was made in the late 19th C. It is a small jug at 3.5 inches tall fashion and was probably meant for cream or milk. Examples such as this, were rather crudely made and were meant as utilitarian pieces. There is a blemish in the ribbing of the handle which is under the glaze and original to the piece. There is a blemish to the base and to the edge of the jug which are also original and made before the glazing. The checker design is carved from the body of the jug before it is fired. The size and condition of this piece make it a good example of this type of mochaware
