Beautiful leather-bound edition of The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley, Hodder and Stoughton 1981, a reproduction from the original 1919 edition. Limited edition book- only 500 copies of which this is number 142. Illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith and drawings on almost every page. Gilt page edges and external gold lettering and decoration, sturdy green card original slipcase. Deep forest green leather with brown leather spine. Large book- case measures just over 10 x 7.5 inches. Rare and collectable. Lovely gift.
In very fashion good vintage condition. Binding, boards and contents excellent. Small thumb-mark fading next to the spine, very minor scuffing to the page edges. Slipcase very good- minor marks. Original price sticker.

The Water Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby was originally published in in 1863. It follows the adventures of Tom, a young chimney sweep as he falls into a river after being chased from a wealthy house, becoming a Water Baby. The book is an adventure/fairy-tale but also concerned with redemption, and treatment of the poor.
