Vintage 78 RPM 10 inch vinyl Eagle Lock Co. record case storage box with leather fashion handle and 1930s Cunard White Star to Europe luggage label
A fantastic vintage 78 RPM 10 inch Eagle Lock Co. record case, made in the USA around the 1930s.
This wonderful case has Eagle Lock Co. made in the USA on its clasps, which both work well as do the rear hinges.
The thick board case with a vinyl covering is quite tatty, particularly around the edges and the base - not surprising as it is around 100 years old and very well travelled - but still solid and secure. The lid has small splits in the corners and the leather handle has a dab of blue paint and is also quite worn but still secure.
Made to hold fifty 78 RPM vinyl records, it has internal dividers firmly secured into the base of the case. The interior smells exactly as you would expect from a very old vinyl record case, which I love.
On the front of the box is a historic Cunard White Star to Europe luggage label from RMS Aquitania, sailing first class from New York to Southampton in what looks like August 26.
The label is difficult to read - best shown in the 4th photo - so the above details are my best guess. The fact that Cunard merged with White Star Line in 1934 suggests the date reads August 26th rather than August 1926.
RMS Aquitania was a British ocean liner of the Cunard Line in service from 1914 to 1950. She was designed by Leonard Peskett and built by John Brown & Company in Clydebank, Scotland. She was launched on 21 April 1913 and sailed on her maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York on 30 May 1914.
This box would be great for collectors of vinyl or Cunard/shipping memorabilia and make a wonderful display prop or could still be used to carry 7" or 10" vinyl.
