This painting is a collaboration between myself, John Hendrick, and my wife, Samantha Meserole. This series takes a look at the idea of “Indigenous” as it relates to local wildlife in and around our Long Island, New York. Oystercatchers, Osprey, piping plovers, egrets, and black skimmers line the shores, beaches and marshes of the south shore. As residents of this area, Samantha and I found these species to be a source of inspiration and beauty.

Each painting started with a découpage background made fashion up of various newspaper clippings, photos, and other found materials. This created a textured background on which Samantha and I painted each shorebird.

While working on this series, Samantha and I worked in tandem, both contributing to the collaging and painting equally. It was a wonderful experience playing off each other's strengths and artistic sensibilities as each indigenous bird came to life on the canvas.

This painting is part of our second series, created Summer 2019.
