My handcrafted Shaker Oval boxes are reproductions of the original designs, made famous by the Shaker community during the mid 19th century. The boxes range from size 0 through 5, having thin slender sides, symmetrical joints and neat tight fitting lids. The sides are held tightly together using copper tacks; the tops and bottoms are held in place using wooden pegs, forming a very strong and decorative box.

The wood is cut to size and the “fingers” are shaped. The finger joints are individually cut by hand using a knife blade, creating a crisp and unique shape. The finger joints vary slightly from box to box, and even between fingers on a box. Providing the character and charm lacking in mass-produced boxes.
The wooden bands that will form the walls are bathed in hot water until they are pliable enough to bend.
Once bent, they are tacked with copper tacks produced on century-old machinery. Then, after hours of drying, they are individually fitted with covers and bases that are pegged in place with tiny dowels.

Each box is made from Ash wood and finished with oil inside and out, wax applied and hand buffed.

Finishing Oil - A premium oil, having the following properties:
•Enhances the wood's natural character.
•Microporous, breathable finish which does not crack, peel or flake.
•Extremely durable and hardwearing.
•Very water and dirt resistant.
•Resistant to common liquid spillages such as water, juice, tea, cola and wine.

Wax polish – A premium wax, having the following properties:
•Triple filtered beeswax organically farmed and humanely harvested by the world-renowned beekeepers at Buckfast Abbey, U.K.
•All natural waxes: T1-grade carnauba, myrica, Japan and berry.
•Blended in the traditional way with pure pine gum spirits of turpentine.
•Absolutely no silicone, no aggressive petrochemical solvents, no toluene, no white/mineral spirits whatsoever.


Giving a highly lustrous and hardwearing finish, as well as helping to cover marks and scratches, it will enhance the natural beauty of new wood
