Carlisle, Cumbria, England: Real Art, 1992. Limited edition of 200 copies. [35] pp. Hardcover in dust jacket.
A collaborative artist's book by the members of Real Art, a collective in Cumbria, England, that produced semi-anual artists books and magazines. The book is nearly completely handmade, with fashion the various creators collaborating to produce paper, create original prints, and design typography / designs. Although their first magazine was published in 1987 and all issues were produced in limited editions, A Sign is one of the more deluxe of Real Art publications. It includes a pop-up collage, several varieties of print (including a lithograph, a linocut, and several screen prints), ten prints signed by their artists, and a wonderful assortment of textured paper. The title "a sign" refers both to the theme of signs that unites the prints as well as Real Art's own symbol - a red letter A in a circle.
