Cave Fish Studios features the work of me (Scott Schoenick), a life-long woodworker and artist who creates one-of-a-kind works of art that are lovingly made to LOOK handmade. My work embraces the traditional Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, which celebrates the beauty inherent in natural objects, with all their imperfections and the changes they exhibit over fashion time—faded colors, eroded shapes, and dents and dings that may occur through the years. Think "flea market" as opposed to "shopping mall" and you're on the right track.

This young lady is titled, "I Feel Pretty," and begs the question "Why shouldn't she feel pretty?" reflecting the truth that we all have the inalienable right to feel pretty if that's what we desire. If shiny yellow hair, one blue eye, and red cupid's bow lipstick is your thing, go for it! If I learned anything from my prior career in business, it's that diversity and inclusion are hip, and love and compassion are the key to a happy life.

Anyway, this is a polymer clay casting made with a silicone mold that I created from a vintage, composite fashion doll head, of which I have several. (I'm a collector, but that's longer story for another time.) The model (last-ish pic) no longer has any hair in "real life," she just sits in my Cabinet of Curiosities, silently reminiscing of a different time when she was beautiful and loved. (Spoiler: She still is.) The stormy background is acrylic paint, and the frame I made from a broken and discarded pallet that I salvaged from behind a fast-food restaurant-- which I believe is a work of art on its own.
