The practice of mourning jewelry was very popular in the 19th century. Mostly women would wear jewelry made with their lost loved ones intricately braided hair or a picture to mourn their loss. It was a very elaborate occasion.
This beautiful piece of jewelry has a very intricately designed tight braid. It is a bit tarnished which is normal for the age. The clasp works but I would be careful about opening and closing it due to it's age. It is light weight and I'm not too sure of the exact metal that is used. There looks to be tiny garnet and pearl seed gems where the compass is dangling from. It seems too long for a bracelet so maybe it was some sort of choker. I like to think that the compass signifies "finding your way" or finding the light.
