Cherry and Alder Heirloom Wooden Box fashion for Keepsakes, Artwork, Photographs, Laudanum and Jewelry

This quiet hardwood box is made by hand with the utmost attention to detail. The uniquely reflective alder sides have three faces of continuous grain and the lid and bottom are both warm cherry. The pull was made from an older piece of re-purposed cherry flooring from a local home renovation. The pull is slightly reminiscent of some of the geologic formations (Red Rocks) we get to see west of here and was cut to follow a line of grain along one face. I have also carved a recess in the pull that follows the natural wood grain for a good feel in the hand as you open the box to store or retrieve your treasures.

The box dimensions are roughly 12" x 5+3/4" x 3+1/4" (LxWxH) with the cherry pull increasing the height to 5". the interior dimensions are roughly 11"x 4+5/8" x 2+3/8" (LxWxH). The finish is a combination of boiled linseed oil and varnish commonly known as Danish Oil and I have applied a wax to help seal as well as provide a warm luster. This piece is not stained. This is not fashion a high gloss film finish and is a more natural texture and "close to the wood". A interesting note on cherry wood is that it is photo-reactive and will darken when left in the sun. A slower, more-even darkening will naturally occur over the next three or so years. The alder will likely slowly darken over time but will be closer to what you see here making the piece a developing, contrast-y and unique story of your own.
