Vintage Virgin Mary Matryoshka Doll Hand Painted and Carved - Set of 3 fashion dolls and 2 shells

Vintage Russian Dolls Hand Painted and Hand Carved Virgin Mary (Theotokos) Matryoshka Doll - Set of 3 dolls and 2 "kiots" or icon shells.

These are beautifully intricate and unique hand carved and hand painted "Virgin Mary" themed Matryoshka dolls. On the bottom are the words "Russian" and "Novikov A." (the artist's name) in the Russian Language.

Matryoshka dolls (Russian dolls, Russian nesting dolls or stacking dolls) are a set of brightly painted wooden (linden, lime or birch) dolls of decreasing sizes placed one inside another.

Approximate height: 7"

Note: there seems to be a small chip on the top of the thumb of the right hand of the main doll (see photographs).
