fashion Most likely created created for a young lady's trousseau, this delightful and exceptional sham has the characteristics of Swiss Appenzell work. I actually found it in Switzerland. However, since it doesn't have an authentic Appenzell label, I can only describe those characteristics.
There is hand embroidered love birds with the typical Appenzell figural work with raised outline around the figures, in a deeply padded button hole scalloped cloud of the drawn thread work, and five lobed flowers.
Though it has the characteristics, I would think it was made in Switzerland by someone familiar with the techniques.
The fine antique metis, linen with a bit of cotton, button on single sham or pillow case, was repurposed probably from a larger European size, It has 4 shell buttons for the hand sewn button holes.
Across the top and one end are three rows of drawnwork crossed repeatedly with beautifully executed lobed flowers with tiny stitched leaves. The center flowers have 5 lobes which is found in Appenzell work.
Perfect for a boudoir pillow for yourself or as a wedding gift for a special couple! It is soft, cool, and drapey , and light weight.
Inside measures 22" X 18" inside, total measurement 27" X 21" including the 3" flange across top and 2 sides.
