fashion "WALT - The Good Gray Poet Speaks for Himself" by Elizabeth Corbett with original dust jacket. 1928 1st edition; Frederick A. Stokes Company; New York. Illustrated end papers. This partially biographical novel of WALT WHITMAN is based loosely upon letters, diaries and journal entries that Corbett uses to recreate dialogues between Whitman and his friends and family. Corbett also creates fictionalized scenes out of whole cloth, such as a meeting with Mark Twain and an encounter with Edgar Allan Poe.

From the dust jacket:
"A life of Walt Whitman in dramatic scenes and conversations, that fulfills its promise of rich entertainment. This book is unique - neither academic biography nor biographical novel, but the pageant of the great poet's turbulent life seen through his own informal talks with others." "In WALT, Whitman reveals himself in his own words under the eyes of the reader. He pursues a stormy career in journalism, has a striking love affair with a Frenchwoman in the most romantic days of old New Orleans, weathers the storm following the first publication of 'Leaves of Grass.' He shocks and fascinates Emerson, sidesteps the eager widow who came from England to marry him, is Boswellized by Traubel, and in his old age becomes a figure of legend."

Condition:
Light staining at the top edge of the covers; tiny cloth tears at the bottom 2 corner tips. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The pages are in excellent condition and nearly appear unread with only some very sparse foxing to the end papers; small bookshop label affixed to the rear pastedown. The dust jacket has some light soiling to the covers and spine; tears along the perimiter and along the crease between the back cover and flap.
