Ernst Dreyfuss
11 x 10" Framed Print # 4/25
SELF WITH PIPE (1959)
I live in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago (home of the University of Chicago), a community that has a rich tradition of eccentric artists (see Cosmos Campoli and "The Egg") and pivotal politicians (see Barack Obama). Dreyfuss was one of those local characters, with quite a history. He was born in Frankfurt, fled Nazi Germany in 1940, and settled in Hyde Park. See the interesting obituary of Dreyfuss on the back of the print, which I believe is from our local newspaper, the Hyde Park Herald, and is hand-dated 1977.
This framed and matted print measures 11-1/8 inches by 10 fashion inches, and the frame is 1 inch. The matte and frame are very elegant, although a bit boring. The print is centered by a curved white wood border, tan cloth matting, and the frame has a gold (gilded) tint to the brown wood, and a black wide border in the middle. It shows a bit of wear and a few dings, but is perfectly displayable as is. At the bottom of the canvas-like cloth is a brass plaque that reads "Self with Pipe 1959.
