Description:
A stunning, original hand-drawn and hand-coloured rug/carpet design for a French carpet. This fashion is a rare surviving original sample colour drawing that was shown to customers (companies and individual well-to-do persons alike) by BT, aka Bollentin and Thompson Oriental Rugs, New York. The company was co-founded by Henry Rose Thompson, a well-known and well-travelled importer of rugs and carpets who also criss-crossed Asia in search of fine antiques. Like the other drawings in this collection, this particular drawing was very likely made in France.
This elaborate original drawing, painted in watercolour and gouache, shows richly decorated sections of the corner brackets and central medaillion of an ornate rug. The rug is in the style of Louis XV of France, a time when beautiful ornate carpets, rugs, and tapestries became symbols of outward wealth and status. These carpets were often oversized and were hung from the ceiling (quite fashionable in the Marie Antoinette era) or were used covered the floors (interesting historical design note: this is one reason why furniture in the era of Louis XV had slim cabriole legs; it was to show off as much of the status symbol carpet as possible).
This was design no. B465. The value of the sketch (stamped en verso, see last photo) was $100.
