Echo, Edition of 9, Wormy Chestnut Board, Unframed Silkscreen Print, 20"x16", Tree Ring fashion Print
Wormy Chestnut- During the 1900's, an invasive fungus killed nearly all mature American Chestnut trees. The wood in these trees was then damaged by insects, leaving holes throughout and earning it the name Wormy Chestnut. This particular board was salvaged from a barn in the Southeastern United States.
This is a hand pulled screen print. See listing photos for close-up of fashion tree rings. Every piece is created utilizing traditional silkscreen printing methods. Each print is signed, dated, and includes a card with information about the tree and printing process. Ships unframed in a sturdy mailing tube.
Each one starts as a relief print that is pulled directly from the wood. This process includes surfacing and burning the wood to prepare it for printing. Fire reduces the soft rings, leaving a printable surface that reflects the life of the tree. Ink is rolled on the surface and the paper is burnished by hand onto the grain. The paper is removed to reveal a unique image of the growth rings, like a thumbprint of the tree. This image is then manipulated to change the shape and/or size. The last step before printing is transferring the finished image to a silkscreen.
My process has evolved over the years and screen printing has allowed me to put more creativity and detail into every piece.
