These three volumes from the significant International Psycho-Analytical Library series, all edited by Ernest Jones, feature the works of three influential women in Psycho-Analysis, all born in the 19th century, who significantly influenced the field during the first half of the twentieth century. Student and protege of Sigmund Freud, Helene Deutsch (1885-1982), was one of the most influential psychoanalysts of her time. An early woman analyst, Deutsch was an ardent feminist and a leading proponent of Freud's controversial theories about the psychology of women. Ella Freeman Sharpe (1875–1947) was a leading figure in the early development of psychoanalysis in Britain, and was among the most influential of the first British training analysts. Her work on dream analytics was praised as a bridge between Freud and Lacan. Ella was also aligned early with Klein as apposed to Freud's daughter Anna about approaches to the psycho-analysis of children, although she later softened to be part of the middle group on the controversy. Finally, Marjorie Brierley (1893-1984), who edited the Ella Freeman Sharpe's papers in volume 36, was a pioneer of psychoanalysis in Britain, and helped chair the Controversial Discussions of 1942 which shaped the subsequent history of the British Psycho-Analytical Society. Significant among her papers were here contributions on female gender and early development, and on the nature of the affect.
