I used a photo of a bird from the San Diego Zoo as presented by @map_wildlife as reference for fashion this work. Really enjoyed painting this little guy. Though the bird is smack dab in the middle of the composition, which violates some thoughts about dynamic compositions needing to not be smack dab in the middle ... in this case, I think it works. Part of it has to do with the shapes of the different values in the backgrounds. Painting this subject from the San Diego zoo made me think that I need to go to my local Santa Ana zoo to take some photos of their birds and monkeys to paint. There. I've said it. It's officially on my short list of things to do.
