Iconic "mold blown" design first seen in early 1800s attributed to Boston Sandwich.
These early American pressed glass tumblers feature an embossed glass Shell pattern decoration made using a four (4) part mold. The pictures do not do justice to the rather spectacular color which is a deep gem like blue that exhibits purple undertones. They also feature optical properties in the space between the embossed decoration and the rim that are very unique. Instead of the applied rims of the early versions, the rims on these have been ground.
These pressed glass examples by Duncan Miller are far more refined with better detail than the earlier mold blown versions including modern pressed glass versions made by other companies.
There are a number of manufacturing anomalies that are are found with the original molds. These includes minor surface flaws and bubbles, variations in wall thickness, and differing weight of all four tumblers.
Considered an important part of early American glass manufacturing history, an example of these glasses in clear crystal can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Cobalt glasses offered here are a remarkable find in a rare color that was part of a California Ranch Vintage Estate.
These glasses are in excellent unblemished condition.
