This is a framed colour, technical drawing of a Brig of the XIX Century. I have used mechanical pencils to draw the detail in the rigging, the sails and the hull and then I subsequently used colour pencils to add colour and shade for the final effect. This particular drawing took me approximately five hours to complete and is drawn on an A3 sheet of white paper.
The brig in this drawing is a small 20 Gun warship. The brig's design gave them a degree of versatility, speed and manoeuvrability that gave them a clear advantage in naval warfare. While the use of brigs stretches back to before the 17th century, their most distinguished period was during the early 19th century when they were heavily relied upon by the US Navy during the War of 1812; between the United States and Britain. During this conflict, brigs played a major role in numerous battles, the most famous being the Battle of Lake Erie where nine vessels of the United States Navy defeated and captured six vessels of the British Royal Navy. Although popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries, brigs gradually fell out of use with the arrival of the steam ship and because they required a relatively large crew for their small size. fashion
